Bio concrete - a "living" self healing concrete

Concrete might be the most popular and common building material in the whole world, and it is indeed a longlasting one. But still it cracks under pressure, change in temperature, air or moisture. And when the cracks expanded it need to be fixed or replaced, it’s both dangerous as well as expensive to fix. But now, researchers from Delft Technical University in the Netherlands have developed concrete that can heal itself using special bacteria.

This special type of concrete which can heal itself by the use of bacteria which is termed as Bio Concrete. This feature also make it known as self healing concrete or bacterial concrete. It is specially made to increase the life span or the durability of the concrete. And as it uses only bacteria to function it is environment friendly too.

According to Dr Jonkers (Henk Jonkers, a microbiologist, one of the two researchers who developed bio concrete.): "In the lab we have been able to show healing of cracks with a width of 0.5mm. Now we are upscaling. We have to produce the self-healing agent in huge quantities and we are starting to do outdoor tests, looking at different constructions, different types of concrete to see if this concept really works in practice ".

If this bio concrete technology can be commercialization, it would be a revolution in building industry. Imagine a building can fix itself even be cracked by pressure, moisture, etc. We can really benefit from it.
