The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has announced that it has completed the installation of 100 solar-powered lamp posts in Khor Fakkan. The project in the Yarmouk District is part of SEWA’s plans to completely replace traditional lamps with solar-powered units on all roads in the town.

The authority says it is committed to rationing power consumption and conserving the environment and natural resources, through the use of eco-friendly systems.

Commenting on the project, Dr. Rashid Al Leem, chairman of SEWA explained, “SEWA is using eco-friendly, energy-efficiency lamps and lighting solutions as part of its policy of using renewable energy and ensuring optimum utilisation of resources. This is in compliance with energy conservation principles of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and International Standardisation Organisation’s ISO 50001, which promotes using energy efficiently to help organisations save money, as well as conserve resources and tackle climate change. ISO 50001 supports organisations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently, through the development of an energy management system.”

The authority says that it intends to carry out similar solar powered lighting projects throughout Khor Fakkan, with a focus on highways and residential areas.

“The move supports SEWA’s sustainable development strategy and its efforts to implement the rational use of energy and water, spread awareness on saving the environment, and conserve resources for generations to come,” concluded Al Leem.
