Electric mini car to be built in China

Electricpowered Mini cars will be manufactured in China and Oxford University, most of them Minis.

BMW, the owner of the Mini brand, said it has signed an outline agreement with Chinese manufacturer Great Wall Motor.

Cars manufactured under the partnership will be used in the Chinese market.

The deal will not affect BMW's plan, Announced last year, Will assemble the first electric Minis in Oxford in 2019. These cars will use motors made in Germany.

BMW and Great Wall Motor still need to work out the exact location of their production lines and how much they will invest.

The Chinese government has set a goal that by 2025, 20% of cars sold should be electric or rechargeable hybrids.

This stimulated all automakers to increase their investment in China.

BMW already has a joint venture with Brilliance to build a BMW brand in China.

In addition to two car assembly plants, the joint venture also owns an engine plant, including a battery factory.

Last year, BMW sold 560,000 vehicles in China, more than double the total sales of the United States and Germany in its two major markets in the future.
