London fire: what should we use in high rise buildings?

According to BBC news’ lastest report, at least 79 people are missing and presumed dead after a huge fire engulfed a west London tower block. It is not yet known what caused the fire.

 

Footage has shown the fire spreading up one side of the building externally, before engulfing the entire block. Which has been described as a "chimney effect", adding that the wind would have fanned the flames.Fire safety experts have pointed to cladding on the building as a possible reason the blaze spread so quickly. Cladding can create cavities which in some cases can cause the chimney effect, drawing flames up the cavity if there are no fire barriers.

 

Fire safety is always important in building construction specially in high-rise building. To reach high fireproof requirement, the materials used in construction need to be non-combustible, so it could be fire barriers to stop the fire spreading. In that case, it can get more time for the people to fee as well as firefighter to rescue.
