A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern gotabato province on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on October 16, local time. Smoke billowed from a fire at a shopping center in northern gotabato province shortly after the powerful earthquake. It is not clear if the fire was triggered by an earthquake, officials said.

On October 16, local time, the Philippines suffered two consecutive earthquakes. The epicenter of the quake was 2 kilometers deep and had a magnitude of 6.3, the Philippine institute of volcanology and seismology (Phivolcs) reported. About half an hour later, another 5.5-magnitude quake struck near the epicenter in kudara province of Sudan. Damage inside buildings in the quake zone.

According to Phivolcs, tremors were felt in many parts of Mindanao during the day, with Kidapawan City feeling magnitude 7.Local officials said the government had received reports of damage to houses and other property and of injuries, according to the report.
